Use them alone or with bark as mulch under fruit trees. They're also a great mulch for many other areas. If they're not compacted, the needles will allow water to seep to the ground and the plants, but a soaker hose or drip system in place under the needles works best. When using pine needles as a mulch in the garden it helps to have irrigation in place first. I also have fewer issues with slugs I suspect the sharp tips and rough edges help keep them at bay. In sections I use pine needles, my strawberries have fewer fungus and mold problems. They stay in place and keep the fruit dry and off the ground. I think they're a near-perfect mulch for my strawberries. Before they're compacted, while still fresh, needles can be slippery when wet so be cautious. Any weeds that do manage to grow are quickly spotted against the brown background and easily pulled out. Rain, snow, my wheelbarrow, and multiple trips through the garden will compress them into a dense mat that keeps weeds in check. After raking up needles, and raking again and again in the same spot to get as many as possible, I place them in thick layers on my garden paths. The first place I use pine needles is on the pathways between my vegetable garden beds. An area that's big and needs to be filled with something that will last a long time. An area where you want to choke out the plants that may grow there. Think about areas of your garden where you want a mulch that stays in place and won't blow away. I see all three of these negative aspects as advantages for using pine needles in the garden. Burning them is rarely an option for many people, so you're left with piles of needles that take up space. You can add them to your compost pile, but after everything else has broken down and turned into lovely, black compost, the needles will still remain intact. Add a layer of needles and plants will struggle to survive.Īnother negative factor is that they take a long time to decompose. The reason you have difficulty growing under a big pine is that the tree shades the ground and reduces the amount of moisture that reaches the soil. Though needles are slightly acidic, they really don't change the pH of the soil. That's why you see so many bare areas beneath pine trees. If left in place, they form a thick barrier that keeps sun, water, and air from reaching plants underneath. They cling to grass and plants and won't blow away even in the strongest winds. If you try to pick them up barehanded, their sharp points prick your skin. When you try to rake them, their slender profile causes many of them to slide through the rake's tines and remain where they were. One of the first negative issues with pine needles is that they're notoriously difficult to remove from your lawn. My Ponderosa pine needles are 6-7 inches long. Spruce and fir trees will also drop needles, but they tend to be much shorter in length and don't pose nearly as many problems as the longer pine needles. Just as deciduous trees drop there leaves in the fall, pines drop a portion of their needles from the innermost sections of branches. You may also have heard them referred to as pine straw. Pine needles, for my purposes here, are the brown, dried needles that have fallen from pine trees. My Ponderosa pines play an important role in my landscape. I think they have a definite place in the garden and offer a great example of how to recycle nature's bounty. I look forward to my annual resupply of pine needles. For many gardeners pine needles have a place in the forest, but not in the garden. Leaves can be composted easily while needles seem to take forever to break down. If left in place they choke the life from grass or flowers planted beneath a tree. While leaves that have fallen from trees can be easily raked up, blown away, or crushed underfoot, pine needles lie in ever-growing mats on the ground and are more difficult to remove. Pine needles are a scourge to many gardeners. They’re all incredibly simple, and most of them were really quick (and satisfying!) projects. Having everything on a single page seems more convenient to me and I have made a number of photo pages along those lines already.Īnd what can I say, I simply dig my own design for this. It’s just inconvenient to use as the viewer has to click and wait for a pageload for every single photo in there. I also tend to think that the popular shape of photo albums – the one where every photo lives on a separate page – is a bad idea. I find that I often have a small number of photos to share with friends. By that I mean a single web page containing a dozen photos or so. All I want is a proper, simple and convenient photo album. I’ll illustrate my first steps here and in case there’ll be further steps I’ll share them as well as they are made. So I decided to just try it out and see how things go. I found that hard to tell just from looking at things. But what about doing things that aren’t within Sandvox’s standard scope? Was the plugin interface designed just to suit Karelia’s needs? Or is it liberal enough to let me do whatever silly things I can come up with as well? Those which can change the actual page structure? Obviously those are powerful enough to let Karelia do their own plugins for Sandvox’ standard features. And their scope is easy to understand: Sandvox will generate HTML code and the design plugins supply the graphics, style sheets and fancy replacement graphics.īut what about the other plugin types? Those for pages, indices or pagelets. As I worked on the designs for Karelia, I am comfortable with those. There are several types of plugins for Sandvox. And that there’s a lot of potential in it as most of the application’s output is implemented by plugins which you can also create yourself to extend Sandvox’ power. And my conclusion about it was along the lines that it’s a great idea but still needs some finishing touches here and there. I wrote about the newly released Sandvox web site creation tool for the Mac last week. If one side of the fight clearly has advantage (from Pack Tactics, a clutch entangle, Fairie Fire, or any other number pf AOE spells), it’s in the other side’s interest to cast something like Fog Cloud or Darkness to force everyone who is affected to roll straight. Well, given what we just went over about advantages and disadvantages cancelling each other out no matter how many are on either side, Fog Cloud essentially evens the playing field. Soooo what the hell would anyone cast Fog Cloud for, if the advantage and disadvantage it offers automatically cancel each other out? What this means is that even if you’re attacking a blind, prone, entangled enemy with a help action from an ally, if there’s even one reason for you to have disadvantage on the attack (let’s say you’re in a Fog Cloud), it cancels all the reasons you’d have advantage. Either you have advantage/disadvantage or you don’t. Instances of them don’t stack up.”Īdvantage and disadvantage cancel each other regardless of the number of things that give either of them to you. Jeremy Crawford, the principal rule designer of Dungeons and Dragons, stated in a tweet on Mathat “advantages and disadvantages cancel each other regardless of the number of things that give either of them to you. At least not if you’re following RAW and RAI, that is (because we all know Rule Zero AKA what the DM says goes, can trump anything I - or Wizards of the Coast for that matter - ever write). “They already have advantage from Pack Tactics, right? So shouldn’t that mean that I have two reasons for advantage, and only one reason for disadvantage, so I’d end up with normal advantage?” “But what about my summoned Direwolves?” The Druid might ask. These two ultimately cancel each other out, resulting in the Fighter (and anyone else attacking someone in the Fog Cloud) rolling straight. However, because her target is also blinded, she has advantage on the attack against that blinded enemy. Given that our Fighter friend here is blinded by Fog Cloud, she has disadvantage on attacks. He was right in front of me, and he’s blinded too, right?” “Okay, so I try to hit the Sorcerer with my sword anyway.

The beaches in Key West are unique, all with a different vibe, and all worth a visit if you get a chance. Depending on where you are staying in Key West, you may have to drive from your hotel or vacation rental, but it wouldn’t be a long drive, as the island of Key West isn’t even 4 miles long! Of course, some hotels and resorts do have their own private beaches available only to guests. Many of the beaches in Key West are located on the southern edge of the island. (Some of the more natural beaches can still be a bit rocky, so bring appropriate footwear.) Despite the coral reefs mentioned above, tourism is so high in Key West, that many beaches have been modified for the utmost beach pleasure. However, if you’re visiting Key West, hitting the beach is definitely worth it. There are lots of things to do in Key West, including exploring its historic downtown, visiting Ernest Hemingway’s house, and catching sunset in Mallory Square. Key West is better known for its colorful houses, culture, and iconic dessert ( Key Lime pie) than its beaches. The short answer? Yes! It is an island city after all. The beaches in Key West are all unique, but all offer some beautiful sights.īefore you plan your trip, make sure to check out The Best Times To Visit The Keys where we break down each month and talk all things weather! Are There Beaches In Key West? It’s a snorkeler’s paradise as the Keys are the site for America’s only living coral reef, the third-largest coral reef in the world. What you do get at Key West beaches are stunning sunsets, calm, blue waters, and tropical fish that often swim close to shore. Any waves that you might be expecting are generally stopped by the coral reef sitting 7 miles offshore. Most of the white sand you see is shipped in to replace the somewhat uncomfortable coral beaches. Key West beaches are not long stretches of golden sand with waves crashing in, but rather Caribbean-style coral reef beaches! With their shallow, turquoise waters, the beaches on Key West are different than other Florida beaches. (It’s also the southernmost point of the Continental US.) Stretching out into the Gulf of Mexico, Key West is (aptly named) the most western of Florida’s archipelago islands, the Keys.
